So this is where I left off last post:
After sanding the top pieces and buying a bit more wood (because of my calculations error), I finally got to stain my table. The first two pieces I did with a brush and they turned out SO dark and took SO long. I decided for the next pieces to use a rag instead - per the request of my handy neighbor - and they went much faster and I loved that color much better. So after everything was stained with one coat, I began assembling it. And here's what it looked like:
I put two screws through every support per board and then put a longer screw at the end at an angle. I do have to say that my arms and abs hurt form all the crunches and drilling necessary to do that many screws for the benches and tables. If you do the math, and I will cause I'm a math person, I drilled in 108 screws on the table and 56 screws for the two benches (total)! Nathan and I did decided to add two 2x4x8s to add more of a lip to the table and then we added two 1x4x8s to cover the screws and give support to the lip.
The final product looked like this:
My brother and sister-in-law came to visit and while we were cleaning the shed, we found these chairs in the shed so I painted them white and had those for the ends. So this table to seat 8 people basically came out to about $150. It did take almost 2 weeks for me to get it done since I could only work on it when the kids were napping or sleeping, but it was a great experience.
To top it all off, I had my sister-in-law, who has beautiful handwriting, add a verse to the underside of the table because this is my prayer for this table:
I pray that the people who sit around this table to eat and fellowship will come to know these truths:
For he satisfies the longing soul,
and the hungry soul he fills with good things.
